Can a new sound coding strategy improve listening with bilateral cochlear implants?

The Temporal Limits Encoder (TLE) is a new sound coding strategy developed by Dr Qinglin Meng and his colleagues at the South China University of Technology. TLE aims to provide temporal fine structure and pitch cues to implant users, both of which are encoded poorly in current sound processing strategies.

Today, we put it to the test using the UT-Dallas CCiMobile research platform to see if TLE can improve spatial hearing abilities with cochlear implants . While it’s too early to tell, initial results show some promise.
